The comprehensive checklist covers the major systems. Open a category to see the kinds of observations included.
Engine & cooling
Oil and coolant levels/condition, visible leaks, belts, hoses, mounts, unusual noises, idle quality, exhaust smoke, visible previous repairs, and cooling behavior. Cold-start behavior is checked when available.
Computer diagnostics
Supported module scans, stored/pending/permanent codes, readiness monitors, battery voltage, and available live data. Monitor status is recorded as an observation; it does not establish why a monitor is incomplete. Scan coverage varies by vehicle and equipment.
Transmission & drivetrain
Automatic engagement, shifting, shuddering or apparent slipping, and visible leaks. For manuals: clutch engagement, pedal feel, shift/synchro behavior, and drivetrain noises. Accessible CV axles, driveshaft components, and differential areas are reviewed.
Suspension, steering & brakes
Accessible ball joints, tie rods, bushings, shocks/struts, wheel-bearing concerns, steering play, and unusual tire wear. Brake pad thickness is measured where reasonably visible and accessible; limitations are documented.
Tires & body condition
Record tread depth for all four tires, visible date codes, cracking, mismatches, and uneven wear. Review panel gaps, overspray, visible repairs, and exterior condition. Premium adds paint thickness readings; a reading alone is not proof of an accident.
Underbody & rust
Photograph accessible rocker panels, pinch welds, subframes, frame/unibody areas, suspension mounting points, brake/fuel lines, exhaust, and leaks. Structural corrosion concerns are identified for further evaluation by a qualified repair facility.
Road test
With authorization and appropriate insurance, review acceleration, braking, pulling, vibration, shifting, steering, and unusual noises. Highway-speed checks are included only where safely possible. Unsafe vehicles or unsuitable conditions may prevent testing.
